GLOSSARY SAMPLE · VALUES OF THE REPUBLICLaïcité

The kind of entry you will find for the 400 terms of the glossary.

Laïcité

Laïcité (secularism): the State is neutral in religious matters. Everyone is free to believe or not to believe, and public services do not favour any religion.

Memory aid. Law of 1905 = separation of Church and State. Laïcité is a principle of the Republic, not the absence of religion.
The question we are often asked

The official questions are free. Why pay?

It’s true, and the French Ministry of the Interior says so itself: you can prepare without spending anything. If you read French well and already know how the institutions work, the official list may be enough. Here, honestly, is what it contains and what it doesn’t.

And what failing costs

  • A new registration to pay, €60 to €100 depending on the centre. Fees are never refunded.
  • A new date to wait for, at the next available session.
  • Your application on hold: without the pass certificate, you cannot apply for a multi-year residence permit, a resident card or naturalisation.

Parcours Civique costs €9.90, less than a single re-registration. And if you fail despite serious preparation, we refund you.

Sources: French Ministry of the Interior, information on the civic exam and the official lists of knowledge questions (in French). The ministry also offers a free 50-question quiz. The exam fee is set by each approved centre.
